Tis the Season…to be wary. With the holiday season upon us, expect an increase in SPAM, especially malicious payload SPAM claiming to be from UPS, FedEx, USPS, Amazon or other shipping or shopping outlets.

Spammers are becoming more sophisticated at using social engineering techniques in their emails. These techniques are designed to get you to open an email and then click on the links or open attachments that leave you vulnerable to infection from Trojans, viruses, worms and rootkits.

Let’s take a look at a malicious email, appearing to come from Amazon.com, but not, and the techniques used by the Grinch (criminal cyber gangs) to make you vulnerable to attack. I have removed the original malicious links.

Everybody hates spam except the spammers. Spam accounts for close to 90% of all email communication. It’s big business. It’s profitable. For the chance to make a millions to billions of dollars with very little effort, spammers have a great incentive to make your life miserable.

Spam brings unwanted advertisements and the dangers of viruses, Trojans, malware, spyware, identity theft and control of botnets.

Receive email and chances are you will receive spam.
